5 Best American Idol Contestants

5 Best American Idol Contestants

One of the most successful shows in U.S. history, American Idol has given the world quite a few
bright stars since it first premiered in 2002. Many of these stars enjoy continued recording
success and fame. While there’s a long list of great contestants, these five are arguably the
best of the best.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson was the first winner of American Idol. She’s gone on to record and release eight
albums and along with more than 40 singles. The ‘Because of You Singer’ has 100 No. 1 hits
and three Grammys to her name to-date. Marrying Brandon Blackstock, the step-son of country
queen’s, Reba McEntire, has undoubtedly helped her career as a talent manager. However, she
was doing very well in her career long before. Clarkson is currently a judge on “The Voice” and
has her own hit television talk show on NBC, “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

Carrie Underwood

Underwood is another one of the most obvious when it comes to the biggest stars whose
careers took off thanks to the reality show. As her official bio notes, she has 26 No. 1 hits under
her belt, half of which she wrote herself. The season three winner has taken home seven
Grammys, 10 Billboard Music Awards, 13 American Music Awards and 14 Academy of
Country Music Awards. Her first single, “Jesus Take the Wheel,” hit No. 1 on the music charts in 2006,
and 13 years later, she’s still topping the charts with singles like “Before He Cheats,” “Smoke
Break,” and “Dirty Laundry.” The mom of two has also hosted the Country Music Awards 11
times alongside fellow musician, Brad Paisley.

William Hung

William Hung was wildly popular in season three, developing a huge fan base. Although he lost
to Underwood in season three, he’s become an inspiration to all future contestants, pushing
viewers to follow their dreams and ignore the opinions of naysayers. Hung went on to receive a
record deal from KOCH Records and released three albums. He’s appeared on a long list of
television shows with talk show hosts like Ellen, Jay Leno, and Jimmy Kimmel. Today he is a
highly sought after motivational and inspirational speaker and business coach.

Jennifer Hudson

Finishing in seventh place in the third season of American Idol, Jennifer Hudson proved Simon
Cowell wrong big time. She won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her role in the 2006 movie,
“Dream Girls.” She also played a supporting role in “Sex and the City” and “The Secret Life of
Bees” in addition to appearing on Broadway and in the U.S. and U.K. versions of “The Voice.”

David Archuleta

Archuleta finished second to David Cook in the seventh season of American Idol. His first single,
“Crush,” made its debut at No. 2 on the music charts. He also went on to make appearances on
“Hannah Montana” and “iCarly.” Although he went on a two-year hiatus to focus on his faith, he’s
since recorded and released seven studio albums.
